I also now have every part needed to refresh both front and rear strut assemblies (all the mounts, cups, brackets, etc), but now I’m wondering if I should do springs while I’m in there. The car is 14 years old with 64K miles. It’s hard to believe that springs would fail (or would decrease their ability to work even a little), but I’d love any opinions on whether you’d swap the springs along with the struts. (Sticking with OEM factory M-Sport suspension)
I'm keeping my oem M sport springs, and using new oem Sachs M sport struts.
Decided against Koni.

Yeah—it came down to either OEM M-Sports Sachs struts or Bilstein B6/B8 with the OEM M-Sports springs. Just wondering if I should freshen the springs while I’m at it. 🤔

Really depends on how much sun exposure you give it and the quality of the firm.

You probably don't need to freshen the springs. If you want to adjust the ride/handling though it's a good opportunity to do it now.

I ordered BMW Performance Springs, which are becoming harder to find now. I will never track this car, but I wanted slightly stiffer springs to compensate for getting rid of the runflats. I also didn't want to lose any suspension travel (lots of wicked pot holes on the mean streets of Toronto). Overall I'm happy with them, although they dropped the suspension more than I expected (I didn't want any drop). I also swapped in Koni Special Active dampers, which work exactly as advertised.

I'm not saying you should do the same. Just take your time, look at the options. It all depends on your priorities. There are likely going to be trade-offs, whatever you decide on.

5 years is good… I garage the car and park in a parking garage at work. So I guess it would be fine.

This is ideal for a newer, lower mileage car, but for me not so realistic. I wouldn’t do this to a 11 year old car with over 100k miles.

I recall reading yrs ago that high quality springs would not sag or degrade in performance over long time periods. Could inspect them carefully for cracks (especially in the bottom coil) and rust.

Removed the nubz from the stock Brembos then painted the exposed part with A52 Space Grey to match the rest of the caliper. Together they weigh 3lbs & serve zero purpose IMO. All you need is a hex key to undo the screws. You can actually feel the reduced unsprung weight. My second time doing this to a pair of 135i brembo brakes. Will get better clean picture in the daylight when I can. Also charged car battery with Eufab via the engine bay terminals because I had it in the garage for weeks, started right up. Cant see where the date is but I suspect it's the original 2011.

Those don't help with heat dissipation? Or keeping debris away from the pads?
Calipers do look slick without them.

Suprgnat did the same with his BMW Performance Brakes on his 128i, I don't believe he's had any issues with debris or heat dissipation, although it'd probably be best to let him speak for himself on his experiences with this mod.

Removed the nubbiez from the Brembos, heres better picture with some daylight. Happy with results, less weight, no apparent downsides

I'd have to imagine there's at least some reason they were engineered/designed to be on there...

The calipers are space grey?!
For real?

If so that’s great for touch up paint.

Finally got a 2011 coupe brochure. With my old lexus I got both a Lexus US brochure and a JDM Toyota Aristo brochure like days after picking up my GS. So I'm ashamed that it took so long to get a 1er brochure.

Since y'all are talking about the 6-pot brakes. I did notice a pic in the brochure that depicts the performance brakes with their little nubs removed.

I'm gonna follow suit on this. No other performance calipers have these so why would they be necessary. Likely just for aesthetics.

My guess is that it changes the resonant frequency of the system and eliminates squeal.

Other than that I see NO reason why.

Maybe a heat sink but that seems silly.

My thought is maybe it was added for additional heatsinking or for some sort of harmonic dampening to prevent brake squeal / noise, but yeah, it's a lot of extra sprung weight per wheel with (apparently) very little downside for removal.

[EDIT: Ric in RVA beat me to the punch]

Good guess. If so, I don’t care about some squeal. I’m trying to shave every ounce and I’ve already gone two piece rotors so this would be a nice additional unsprung savings. With that and the forged wheels I’m saving 14lbs on each front corner.

Tend to agree. Acoustic dampening, most likely.
Some aid in heat dissipation as well, likely.
