Finished it today, even followed the directions, went to Sears and bought the right tools... Right angle tool == way easier than a small flat head...
Thanks! Problem is the lower grill now looks grey and everything else looks black... Anyone have an idea of what to do with the lower grille besides ghetto matte black paint? |

I have just gotten matte black grilles and am about to do this, but I can't figure the steps.
What happens between removing the torx screws and unpicking the tabs? The images seem to miss out a couple of steps that lead to exposing the tabs on the grille. I can't see mine from front of the car. Mind you I haven't got the torx driver yet, but prefer to know what I have to do in advance.

FYI, you really don't need the torx. I just used a flat head screwdriver that fit.

I am confused? You would rip out the clips attached to the grills making those useless for future use...

Why again does everyone puirchase black grills when you can paint your stockers? Is there an actual difference from aftermarket black ones to our stock ones as in the fin count or something? |

In the end the grab and pull method worked out fine (much like most things in life).
Car looks really badass now. All I need is the Batman logo.

Used the method described in the DIY and found the 90 degree tool to be very useful! You have to really peel back the bumper to get to the other clips, but in the end no broken clips and an installed OEM Performance Grill
15 minute job.

Searched and found this thread to install mine. I was a little hesitant at first sight and realized I had to do the forum DIY search before any unnecessary trial and error. Despite my local auto retail store not stocking any right angle tool, they had a pick and hook set which I bought and used. (Not too sure if its the same thing anyway). This method was surely very convenient, time-saving, and easy! Thank you very much for this write-up.
Although the new grills make such an amazing and awesome new look to the car, the sad part was realizing when I took them out that the grills are two piece and I could have just as easily saved some money painting the chrome pieces instead of buying a whole new set. Oh well. You live and you learn. I should have went on to read about some of you painting yours instead but I only read the first post instructions and that was it. I like to think that I saved my investment in the time factor and not having to worry about any cracking or peeling for an unprofessional paint job. On that note, if anyone is looking for any stock grills...i have an extra set. lol. a little side by side comparison (cell phone pic):

If you have issues like I did about the discoloration between the gloss black kidney grills and the lower grills here is a DIY that might help. It is on a 128i but should be similar in manner: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showt...IY+Lower+grill

Just use the new grills as reference to where the clips are actually at. I only pulled out the top of the bumper to get the top clips and the one closest on the side near the middle. The bottom ones are easily gotten from the front.

Start easy and gradually increase the force. Don't jerk it.
