Let's get this correct finally!

How many 1M's are coming to the USA?

Steved who saw the car and says it back seats fold, on his thread says 1000.

Scott 26 who we all look forward to on the forum says?

I am going to the Detriot Auto Show (have reservations already) because I am VERY interested in this car.

But Inside Line says 1000 to USA.

Auto Express and Autocar say 450 to the UK.

And in Australia someone is claiming only 100 for them.

I will not buy this car w/o a test drive and ordering it the way I want.

This may not be possible with only 1000 units coming to the USA.

Thanks

Hi I have an internal document just sent to me by my dealer in the UK and can confirm that the allocation for here is 450. So I guess the 1000 quoted for you guys is probably correct.

Nobody is concerned that only 1000 units are coming to the USA? Or you guys are dismissing that info?

I really want one but I want to see it in person before I order it! What a dilemma!

I thought there was another post stating this car would not be limited. They were to produce as many vehicles as ordered?

Edit, here is the link... http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=458226

By saying that it is limited with that low a number, demand would be high and dealers can charge $$$$ over MSRP.

I spoke with my CA earlier today. I have been #1 on the list at my dealer for several months. While they are confident I will get a vehicle, they are somewhat doubtful that #2 will get an allocation (fairly small dealership). Sounds like the alotment of 1000 vehicles for the USA is probably correct. At the end of the day, if you really want this car you should already be on a list. While unfair and unfortunate, it is doubtful that you will get the opportunity to test drive the vehicle prior to purchase.

I gotta say if this is true, its a real bummer. Worse is not knowing how many will be made.

Ive had opinions about how the tease unfolded over the last few months, but not knowing the quantity is worse. I agree, just tell us, we can take it.

I'll also go back to earlier comments, if there isnt enough 1M's Im not buying a different bimmer - Im shopping another boy racer.

1,000 for sure. I love it no reason to have a ton and have to discount them. Sticker price is what they should all sell for if dealers had some balls.

I'd really like to know this as well. I hope they don't limit it, that would be unfortunate espically as they will have missed out on some sales.

From the BMW US web site.

http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...M/default.aspx

Note the end of the first paragraph speaks about "Limited Quantities"
No numbers mentioned but it does appear there will not be an order all you want program for the 1M.

I really hope they don't limit it. I don't understand why they would have to. I'm no expert, but would it really be that hard for a company like BMW, that produces over a million cars a year, to make a few thousand 1M coupes. I think they would have no problem selling them. It's not like they're making them by hand, and most of the parts are already used on the M3 and 135i anyway. And it's not like the engine is unique. I believe the general conclusion is that it is the same powerplant from the Z4is.

In interviews with Dr. Segler, he has said this is supposed to be an M car for the younger generation. But by limiting production, this allows dealers to charge whatever they can get for them, thus making the age of the average customer go up. So, hopefully limited production is just a rumor. Or at the very least, send more than 1000 to the U.S. I have been following the 1M since the beginning and I was really looking forward to buying one some day.

The production is to run till early spring 2012, and that is the limitation as informed by my dealer. So as many cars as they can sell during that time.

That's good to hear. I hope they're correct. But there's still so many conflicting stories....

It would not surprise me to see a 2 stage tactic employed here. With the conflicting information maybe there is a touch of truth in both sides.

It would not surprise me to see BMW allocate only a certain amount to each respective market. 1,000 for the US 450 for the UK 400 for Australia etc... Once those are sold or reach a predetermined number (hint: once the 1M is profitable) then release the convertible, DCT, Monte Carlo Blue options etc...

M3 goes away at the end of next yr or the start of 2012. This leaves no "entry level" M car if the 1M goes away in early 2011 unless they bring the Z4M or extend the life of the 1M. Or as "Scott" alluded to bring the X3M to fill the gap.

This prompts me to ask; will there be a two year run of the 1M (2011/2012), or only one?

Logically, if they're producing cars up until Spring of '12, it would make sense for their to be 2 years of the 1M. I'm confident they've already started production, in full force, especially if they're planning to have these cars ready by May/June '11 in a sizeable quantity.

Another thing I would like to know is if there is a 2 year run of the car, despite only 1 year of production, does that mean we can expect 4,500 unit / model year?

One thing I am concerned about is the dealers charging ridiculous mark-ups on this car.

It really doesnt make sense for BMW to limit an entry level M car. They should want as many people to own the car so that they would move up the M product line.

Exactly. When it says "limited quantities" on the website, I think they mean it will be a fairly short production run compared to other cars they make for 5 or 6 years. I doubt it will actually be a set number of cars for each country
