CORRECT 1M Fluids List [Engine, Transmission, Differential]
NOTE:The intent of this thread is not to call-out or put on full blast any specific dealership/service dept. It help people avoid some of the past confusion with various service centers over what fluids to use in the 1M.
ENGINE OIL: 07 51 0 017 866 SAE 5W-30 ENINGE OIL FILTER: 11 42 7 566 327 Oil Quantity: 6.5 liters or 6.9 quarts w/oil filter change. Scope Check B. Engine Oil Service (oil + filter) C. Rear Differential Fluid D. Multi-point Inspection E. Loose Part(screw) in Rear Chasis Area If you look at C, the part number for the fluid that went into the transmission or rear diff(unknown which one) is 83 22 0 406 941. This is BMW M3 MTF-LT-2 SAE75W-80 manual transmission fluid. This seems almost unthinkable. The mechanic had to ask for this by P/N the part is then scanned by the Part Dept. and then given to the mechanic to put into the car. In this case the only fluid that was changed was the engine oil. The inccorect transmission fluid was build out by mistake but never actually put into the car and the differential fluid service was totally forgotten and never done as well. SAMPLE INVOICE(Correct Service Performed): EVERYTHING LOOKS GOOD HERE! UPDATE: April 27th, 2015 New BMW oil for USA... Quote:

This should be the ONLY sticky we have! This keeps getting screwed up!
Someone with a direct line to BMWNA needs to get involved. Just had a thought, the 3rd 1M to be delivered here is for the President of BMWNA's kid who is in college here. Bet it gets fixed after he does 1,200 miles!!! |

Not sure if you wanna add this to the OP, but from what I have read here, a work-around for the currently out-of-stock MTF-LT-5 tranny fluid is Porsche p/n 00004320729 (1 liter). Apparently it is the same fluid (Pentosin FFL-3).
See the 2 documents below: http://www01apps.zf.com/kst464/ZF_In...011_en0700.pdf (1M tranny is GS6-45BZ or S6-4 for short) http://pentosin.net/pressreleases/CR...Pento_FFL3.pdf

Was just reading in the Service and Warranty Information manual that came with my car that for the 1M and M3 DCT, the transition fluid is not required to be changed other than during system repairs (page 6). Not that I agree it never needs to be changed, but certainly different than the M3 manual trans which is specified to be changed.

It blows my mind this continues to be an issue. I was the second car in my area to take delivery and the first to get it serviced. They had all the correct fluids months ago. Not sure why other dealers can't figure it out. I feel bad for you guys.

I'm sorry this happened to you, Metak. You're so conscientious.
If I were you, I'd have it flushed and changed. .

That's so bad, I can barely even advise. Perhaps you can get the service manager to put the LT-5 claim in writing, or just change it again for the trouble when you bring it in for the rear diff fluid. .

My Story.....
So believe it or not this keeps happening to people and now me. I thought I had all my ducks in a row. I called the parts dept. to verify fluids were in stock.
Parts guy verified that the Rear Diff fluid was in stock(P/N 83 22 2 282 583), but did not have the MT-5 fluid in stock(P/N 83 22 2 239 654). The service adviser told me to bring it in anyway, get the engine oil + filter and rear diff fluid changed out. They would then order the MT-5 fluid and schedule an appointment to perform that service when it arrives. I also had a screw rolling around sound coming from the back trunk area of the car that the shop foreman found while I was doing the paper work. So the services performed according to invoice: A. Scope Check B. Engine Oil Service (oil + filter) C. Rear Differential Fluid D. Multi-point Inspection E. Loose Part(screw) in Rear Chasis Area If you look at C, the part number for the fluid that went into the rear diff is 83 22 0 406 941. This is BMW M3 MTF-LT-2 SAE75W-80 manual transmission fluid. This seems almost unthinkable. The mechanic had to ask for this by P/N the part is then scanned by the Part Dept. and then given to the mechanic to put into the car. If anyone can offer a reasonable explanation I would love to ease my concern but I have a feeling this is not good. Thanks.

UPDATE:
Quote:
-The service manager claims they never used the MTF-LT-2 on my car even though it appears on the invoice. They are firm in the fact that it was just a billing error(billed but not performed). -They also told me the rear diff fluid wasn't even changed, even though it was in stock. It was just 'overlooked'. If I hadn't called I would have been driving without the 1200 service on the rear diff and possibly the wrong fluid in the transmission. What a total disaster. Quote:

Metak - sorry to hear about your woes. Makes one want to change thier OWN fluids doesn't it!
I think the reason why this keep coming up - is that most BMW techs only go to school maybe once every year or so. And most have not had any training on the 1M. I think most techs seem to think... ohh its a //M... it takes what the M3 takes... MTF-LT-2, which as we know is NOT the correct fluid. Hang in there... by the time the 45K service rolls around... these techs will know what fluid is required. lol Last edited by Dackelone; 12-07-2011 at 11:09 AM.. |

Goddamn it.
Does the Performance Center do car servicing? I'll gladly drive the 180 miles to Greer if they do! Thanks again for this thread Metak and sorry they screwed yours up

[QUOTE=Mr.Metak2you;10934310]The problem is I don't even know what to have flushed at this point.
Metak - simply advise them that - according to their own invoice - they placed the incorrect fluids. They have NO backing for saying it was just an invoice mistake. I would advise that - according to all documentation including theirs, that they placed the wrong fluids. Say that this has accidentally happened to others (including me), but that other's dealerships have stepped up to the plate and done the CORRECT thing - replace the fluid with the correct fluid, then changed it again in 4 - 6 weeks with the correct fluids to make sure that the wrong fluids were completely flushed (this is what my dealership did). State also if they are unwilling to do this, then you will be contacting BMW NA and the area BMW servce representative. Also say that you will be giving them a "0" on any and all future surveys you fill out from BMW regarding their dealership. Also, ask to speak with the general manager regarding this and tell him of how other dealerships have handled this correctly. Good Luck! |

Another bad story
Motorwerks of Barrington just did the 1200 on my VO and they put in Part Number 83 22 0 309 031, ie LT-2,(despite my warning re correct fluid being an issue on the internet). They now say that BMW stance is that the "correct fluid is the LT-3, but that LT-2 is "OK" as well! They claim that the part number I gave 83 22 2 156 969 "does not exist in BMW parts catalogue. They said they would put anything I like in it if I so choose (they are also a Porsche dealer, so presumably have the equivalent to LT-5 in stock for the PDK...) Any thought on what I should do?

Dunno--likely the same reason they put in obsolete fluid, as in didn't read bulletins!
