what is the code for the 1M engine?
Does anyone know the internal BMW designation for the engine in the 1M? All ///M engines have been Sxx (i.e. S14, S50, S52, S54, etc). While the S50/S52 shared a lot of parts with the M50/M52, it still had enough of a difference to warrant its own engine code. \
This 1M engine seems to be the same as the one in the Z4is which makes it the first M car engine that is also in a non-M car. Sorry if the code has been posted in a previous thread. I search a few of the "1M spec" thread and could not find it. |

I was curious if BMW was going to try to call it a Sxx engine. They did add a dry sump but I was not sure if that would give them enough reason to have it own engine code.

I guess there really isn't much added to it to earn itself an "S" front letter, sadly...

N54 refers to the "generation" of the engine.
B30 means it's 3.0 liter in capacity. TO or TU typically means it's a technical upgrade from the same generation engine, or that there are a few specs changed from the same engine code. For example, the M52TUB25 engine that came equipped on the E46 323Ci is "technically" an M52 engine, 2.5 liter in capacity, but it's got a few other upgrades like double vanos and a hybrid drive-by-wire system. Other than that it shares the same block and same basic head design with the M52B25 made in the late 90s.

I think if you want to know more about the //1M motor one should be looking more at the history of M and the Z4 sdrive35is engine. M did the tuning for that engine in the Z4 sdrive35is. Its been hinted that the Z4 sdrive35is - just missed out by being sold/marketed as an Z4M. For what ever reason BMW decided on calling it: Z4 sdrive35is. a name that is entirely too long!
PS: I'd like to hear more about this dry sump is for the tranny thing. Doesn't sound right to me. |

That has only to do with where the vehicle is produced, not whether it is an M car or not. M coupes have vins starting with 5UM* this indicates they were produced in the USA...

5UM is a BMW M assembled in the US. 5UX is a X-series BMW assembled in the US (X5, X6, and new X3) 5YM is a X5M or X6M Given the assembly location is Leipzig, it is very likely that we will see VINs starting with WBS for the 1M. |
