2011 135i N55 Engine Noise - Not Good

Have a feeling this is rod bearing failure or something like that. Any thoughts, going to get the vehicle towed to a dealer Monday to have a look at it.

I have attached a voice clip of the car stopped and with a slight application of the throttle. Oddly enough started off earlier in the day and the car stalled out (Dual Clutch), restarted and could hear a slight tapping noise between 2000 to 4000 rpm, barely audible. Was driving home later in the evening and when I approached my house I started to hear this. Not good at all. Vehicle is under CPO warranty until August 2017 so will keep the forum updated on what the issue is as I find out.

Thanks

That doesn't sound good...

When my #1 rod went it seized tight and stopped the motor, but that was an oil flow failure issue.

Never made a sound again....just stopped.

So glad you are CPO!!!!

This might be of interest: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1207369

Sounds very similar. His issue was spun conrod bearing and had to get a new engine.

Swagon,

That's the noise it started with earlier in the day. Drove the car for another hour and turned into the sound clip. Since it is Easter I won't be able to talk to a dealer until at least tomorrow. Waiting to get it towed until I know which dealer wants to work on it.

Hopefully it's just something like a fuel injector. I've been around that sound several times and it's amazing how awful and scary it can sound. Good luck.

Currently at Pfaff BMW in Mississauga, ON. It is still being "diagnosed" been a week now and I haven't heard any solid solutions from them. Only thing they have said thus far is the motor may need to be replaced.

Unfortunately no further details at this time :-(

Hopefully I get the car back before summer is over.

Just wondering if anything was dropped down the ports, like a disintegrated oil filter. Can stop the oil pump. But I doubt it would have lasted 1000 km if that was the case.

Yup, definately was pretty unexpected, car just had the BMW PPK on it, beyond that was babied and used as a daily driver. Will keep the forum updated as I find out more information.

Just for my own curiosity, what oil change intervals did you use, what kind of oil?

Sounds like an oil pressure loss, maybe oil pump tensioner/chain broke?

Intervals varied but were usually one to two times per year. Usually at less than 10k km.

Service was all done at a dealer as the vehicle was still under warranty.

Damn, that sucks. Too bad it is tire season right now, hopefully they can look at it soon.

Ok,

Here is the result. Just summarizing what the tech wrote, didn't have a chance to speak with them directly just the service advisor.

Loud noise heard when engine warm removed oil filter and checked oil condition, found copper like filings in oil and filter.

Removed engine
Drained oil
Removed valve cover
Removed intake camshaft bearings
Found score marks present
Removed oil pan
Found excessive amount of metal particles
Removed oil pick up and found connecting Rod bearing on cylinder 2 is discoloured
Removed bearing cap in order to find a spun bearing
Removed oil filter
Excessive amount of metal shards and particles present

New motor appears to be on back order. End of May is estimated when motor comes in. Then 3 weeks to replace it. My guess is end of June is when vehicle is ready to drive.

Any thoughts on whether I should renew warranty for a year on it? With new motor I figure the car should give me at least another 5 years of good service.

Thanks

List of items BMW is replacing under warranty. Do I need to be worried about the turbo in such a failure? I am not sure if the same oil is used in this case.

Yeah... I think I would go with the extended warranty when you get it back this summer. Damn this will be expensive ~20K dollars.

Good Luck,
