Toronto Windshield Repair
Well it happened, I got a crack on my windshield. Doesn't even look like there was any impact to it, I didn't even hear anything either. Regardless I need a place to go get it repaired in TO, any recommendations?
Thanks guys! |

Yes, I definitely will get an OEM windshield. I would take it to the dealer but, I still need to a pay detectable and would like to keep everything with in that (or as close to that) as possible.

I took mine to Speedy Auto Glass and paid an extra $200 to get OEM after my insurance company wouldn't pay for the extra. It's just a few blocks from BMW Toronto so it was done in a day at Speedy.

I'm pretty sure the rain sensor is separate from the windshield. So whether or not you get OEM, you will get a rainsensor. I had a 2006 325i and had to replace my windshield for a crack and the BMW dealers told me that because the windshield had a rainsensor that it would cost more. This was BS. I replaced it and the guy at Apple Autoglass (who used an OEM windshield he picked up from the dealer) told me the rain sensor is separate from the windshield, but if you have it replaced at the dealer they will install a new rain sensor and charge you or your insurance for it.

The rain sensor is bonded to the window, so are the OEM guys taking the old rain sensor off and re-bonding it onto the replacement glass? There is also mention of a condensation sensor as part of the unit. Are all of these functions going to work properly if a replacement non BMW windscreen is put on? Will a non-BMW windscreen affect the warranty of these parts?
It seems like most of us will have a windshield replacement or two during the life of the car. |

I agree with everyone here other than anyone says get a non-OEM (ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURER).
You pay for insurance why not use it? Also thanks for the info about the sensors PPL! I had a smash and grab in a previous car. No big deal but I went to a lot of trouble to get OEM, and very glad I did too. It's not easy but I think it's well worth all the extra trouble. Insurance like to play games, even dealerships can and obviously cheap glass places do big time. FYI sp**dy here in Miss not only used cheap china glass but they re-used the seal, and put little chips around the window, and that was on a Corolla. I was totally ignorant but after doing my homework on OEM I know what to do now. I'd never use a place like that again! NEVER! I suggest that you talk to the glass shop directly and do it in conjunction with the dealership. Make sure everything is perfect. Take pictures in macro mode of all the trims. Obviously take pictures pre and post install. I have heard lots of stories in 1addicts of people getting it in but it's not aligned. Not sure what that is about but it doesn't sound good. You really do need the best glass people for this car. Obviously they need to order it in. I don't even think at this point there is non-OEM for our 1, especially here in Canada. I would also let the glass guy know you took pictures and you are expecting perfection. Do this in a nice way, and you can always say how much have read here on the net about issues in USA. Get the senior installer (owner) to personally to guarantee it! Then because you are using the dealership, and anything that is not working, it's their problem. Or at least you have a history with both. Let us know how it goes. I bet at least half of the 1 series owners in Ontario read this. Please let the forum know how it goes (good, bad ugly) because I have been pm'ed by 5 people from previous posts about glass. It's like hairdressersssss, once u finds a good one they become precious...sussusuussss. EspressoBoy |

hey guys,
Thanks for all the comments and input. So the final advice is to go to the dealership and have insurance cover whatever the cost? While I don't mind doing this, I was hoping someone could recommend a good place to go to, a place that they had skilled work done....but if you all just say go to the dealer, then i'll do that. With that said, from my experience the dealer just calls in a "speedy" guy and the do the change, if that's the case why pay the middle and just go to a glass shop myself? I will keep you guys posted and let you know. |

I can recommend a place here in Mississauga if you want to do the drive. I don't think I said go to the dealership and leave it with them. I am saying get involved and make sure you talk to the people who install, see other cars they are working on, make sure you do get OEM only, and take pictures in the case you do have problems. At least that is what I will do if I ever have to replace it.

Hi, did you end up getting your screen replaced Looking?
Looks like I need a new screen now also it seems that insurance doesn't mind whether it is done at Speedy\Apple or the dealer so I am wondering why I would not just get it done at the dealer even if it costs double because I am paying just the deductible either way and I will get exact glass...? Also maybe if I went to the dealer and booked ahead I could get a loaner for the day\night\however long it takes. |

Just got this done. I recommend waiting if you can untill a big wind storm or hail and claiming it under insurance as a comprehensive (300-to-500-deductible).
OEM is around 1300$ at dealer install. This is because the rain sensor is also replaced with the windshield.

$1300?!?!?! Thats ridiculous.
I got a quote from a dealer in Ottawa for $789, all-in...and that was still a rip-off. I went to a smaller placer, got it done for $495. Apple quoted $495 as well, so same thing. This included the OEM glass with rain and condensation sensor, and installation. I was also told you can get aftermarket glass for the 135, you had to get OEM. Not sure if thats true or not, but I wanted OEM anyway so I didnt really care.
