The question is will the 1M do what the E92 didn't do - reclaim the crown from the E46 M3 as Australia's PCOTY.

Wow. 16th May in Perth. That is early. I presume a different ship brings the East coast deliveries as mine and the other March builds are not on Steve's ship.

Unlikely - they'll probably use the car at the launch! Although it won't be used as a demo you can bet there'd be 1000's of butts on the seat before yours. The car ain't yours until it's paid for and delivered.

I risked that when my 135i was one of the first into the country.

I have had 6 135i owners ring me this week confirming they have 1M's coming and all want out of their 135i's. i am thinking the 135i market is about to get hit pretty hard for resales. The Sydney guys are right into it from the calls i am getting. I think my fully modded 135i is about to worth a lot less.

i think the value of the 135i will be buoyed by the m1, especially a 135i with an ///M badge ha ha, and it seems most people on car sales are kidding them selves anyway with the value of their car, or maybe those 2 and 3 year old cars are selling at those near new prices i don't know,

OT but kinda relevent BMW has just recently dropped their pants big time on alot of models including the M3 which is now 9k less, and the pure edition M3 is now around 131k, lol, tempting

Not all 1M buyers are ex 135i. Me for one. Keep your modded 135i if you feel you will lose too much on it as the difference between it and a 1M may turn out to be marginal at best and non existent in the real world. Depending on the extent of mods of course. And if its' not quite there you can always do some more mods which is always fun. Besides, you can bathe in smug satisfaction as you hose off a 1M.

From an engineering perspective there is no chance that the 135i that I currently own will hold a candle to the 1M that will arrive in June. On looking at the overall spec of the 1M the added value items, when compared to my 135i are staggering. I am at a loss to understand how the 1M can be anything other than a lost leader for other BMW models. The M3 running gear front and back, the limited slip diff, the hefty dual plate clutch, the larger than life brakes, the wider wheelbase, the 19 inch wheels, the retuned exhaust, upgraded springs and dampers and the list goes on. There is no way that this splendid list of engineering loveliness could be added to the 135i for the current price differential which is really very small....and I haven't even mentioned the mods to the engine and interior. Best of luck with the 135i and attempts to make it into an M1 but it's probably not economically possible. I am absolutely convinced the M1 is a bargain when compared to anything else on the market and when it is seriously compared to competitors cars the BMW M1 will outshine its peers. BMW do this on purpose. They love to develop a few really good cars that appeal to the "enthusiasts" and market them hard and sell them way below cost. The glory then rubs off on the 318i owners whose cars don't look much different.....but they sell thousands of 318i's on the back of a BMW image built on the back of the M3 and now the M1.

Alpine,

My car is also on board the TOPAZ ACE. ETA for Port Kembla (the Sydney cars) is 23 May, two days after Melbourne.

If the captain is watching out for ice bergs we should have our cars by 10th of June.

Earlier than I expected, in fact. Will have to start thinking about how to get best value for the Audi.

Which one is yours? When I checked the manifest it showed only one WBS (1M) model on board. The rest were WBAs. Did I miss something?

Mine is VP75494. So looks like Alpine's car (VP75495) came down the production line right next to mine!

Was loaded onto the ship on 16 April.

NPV, would you please check for mine. It's VP75444. I couldn't see yours, Alpine's or mine on the Wallenius site. Thanks.

No problem.

Your car is on the Norweigen ship TAIKO.

Was loaded on April 8th and arrives in Brisbane on May 19th. The ship made two stops in the USA (Maryland and Georgia) and is now on its way to cut through the Panama Canal. Stops in NZ and then heads on to Australia.

Your bill of lading is: DE1097006
Booking number is: DEBRB902210

If you're feeling anal you can track the exact position of any large vessel by using its IMO code: http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/shi...MMSI=258693000

Thanks mate, I was starting to feel left out. How did you find this? I put my VIN in on the Wallenius site and it showed "no record found". Same for your car. Wrong shipping line?

I agree entirely with all of this if you take both cars from a buying them as new perspective. I.e. a new 1M vs a new 135i subsequently modded to 1M standard. However if you have already invested a substantial sum on your 135i and want to move to a 1M you will take a bath, both on normal resale and mod depreciation. Add that to the cost of buying the 1M. In my own experience I have never gotten anywhere near my money back on mods. So this being the case you are probably better keeping your existing 135i. Sure, if you are after exclusivity or you have to have the genuine article there's no argument, you have to go with the 1M and pay accordingly. But, if we are talking purely from a driving perspective in the real world of day to day and you don't have to have the "badge", a modded 135i could be just as satisfying to own if not more so, especially by being passionately individualised.
Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

I agree the 1M is a much better package out of the box and it's no comparison to a stock 135i. However, some of the more hardcore enthusiasts would look to change out a lot of the things the 1M gives you over the 135i anyway. For instance, the quad exhaust, the wheels, the springs and dampers, even tyres etc. Yes, it's a better base to start with and many would argue there is really no need to change anything but many of us who use these forums fit into the category of enthusiasts that like to mod their cars, although I've noticed a few like to keep it completely stock. If you check out the M3 forum there are some modded M3's that have upgraded most of the components you speak of.

In terms of straight line speed, I see the potential as being the same. Of course, the 1M has an advantage with the LSD in putting the power down though. But I also think the N54 steptronic guys will run consistently faster times unless your a really good stick shifter. At the end of the day, the biggest differences are the aesthetics and the suspension setup, otherwise the cars are basically the same.

The 1M will hold it's value better but that's not what buying a car is about. Besides modded cars will hold more sentimental value to the owner anyway. I really hope some of you guys mod the crap out of your 1M's
