If the BMW Group is to enter the American market with a diesel product, it will be with one that offers a truly sustainable solution such as the exhaust treatment by SCR technology—which is the drastic reduction of NOx content by use of urea.
Those SCR catalytic converters dramatically lower NOx content and—in cooperation with the particle filter—reduce exhaust emissions to a minimum. However, we still have quite some way to go before this trend-setting technology will be fully developed.

As I recall this is a diesel thread. My next car, whatever it will be, will be diesel powered and I hope that means a 1-series. I've been reading road tests of euro BMW's for years and most of them conclude that of all the engine variants available in Europe, the best ones are diesels because of the easily accessible torque for daily driving and of course the huge fuel economy in the same package. They are far more entertaining than any hybrid will ever be, not to mention substantially less expensive.

I would much prefer a hybrid in the 1 serie than any diesel.

Because a diesel engine should not ne in a sport coupe. I think hybrid is better solution for sportcar as you keep the gasoline engine character and get mileage close to what diesel delivers.
I am not against diesel in general, just against it in a sportcar.
And BMW had been long hesitating before first putting the 3.0 d in the e46 coupé in 2003 (or 2002).

I have a 120d 177hp 3-d on order.
With a chip it'll land across 220hp 0-100km/h aprox 6.7sec and still keep it's impressive mileage.

I drive way too much to buy a hybrid. honestly, i would have to buy a new battery ever 3-4yrs.(its about 75,000 miles in a prius before the PRICEY battery needs to be replaced) I have two words. F THAT.

If your first criteria is saving money and if you drive 20000 miles a year, then, a 2.0L 4 cyl diesel is the choice. But then, forget about sound, engine reving and some automotive pleasure.

Your car is really going to look great. They have stopped offering the M-sport on 1er in France since the arrivals of the 3 doors and facelifting, I don't know why.
But really, 3 doors, alpineweiss and M sport, good choice .
Just the inline 6 sound will be missing, but i guess you drive a lot.

My sole criteria isnt saving money. But if I wanted to be more fuel conscious, I would use diesel. I'm just not big on batteries. :iono:

It's not only the economy but yes it's one of the biggest reasons that I got diesel, I find the new diesel engines fun to drive. Sure, maby not as fun as a 130i but then a 130i is like 10k more and much more expencive to own. The thing is that when you buy a new diesel in Sweden you get like a TAX bonus from the country beacuse you choosed a clean car. And that means that I dont need to pay any taxes on the car for like 3 years.
So combine the 3 years without having to pay taxes and the low consumption, the lower price on diesel fuel and the rest is yours to figure out. I cant understand why peaple choose cars running on gas.
Why go 30mpg when you can go 60mpg with a diesel. And for the record the new diesel engines don't even sound like diesels anymore.

I have to laugh at the arrogant comment about BMW's trademark driving dynamics not being able to mix with engine efficency- which is something BMW is actively pursuing innovations with, "Efficent Dynamics" ring a bell?- and to boot, why the heck does BMW already offer an abundance of diesel models in Europe to begin with? In addition to superb driving dynamics, BMW has always been about making cars with balance in all aspects, which means making them a practical and enjoyable means of getting from one point to another. For that I'm thankful, because that means for once you can make a sensible purchase without having to compromise one thing or another of importance just to have a little indulgence to revel in.

For diesel fans, there's preliminary news of the 123d today. Its a 2 liter twin turbo diesel with 201hp, 0-100km/hr in 7.1 seconds, and 54.3mpg. Looks like efficient dynamics to me. I think this is the first diesel engine with start/stop technology too.

Now that is what I'm talking about. 7.1s isn't great, but just think of the tuning potential. If the 120d can be tuned for well over 200hp, I can't wait to see what the full potential of this will be.

Also remember, diesels excel more in the 80-120km/h times over thier 0-100km/h times.

Thanks WolfsburgerMitFries for this link. My best quess, we would not see the 1er diesel anytime sooner than two-three years on the US shores. BMW will want to get their feet wet first with the 3er, 5er and X5 in 2008-2009.

The 120d 2007 modell has start&stop function so the 123d wont be the first one with this technology.
