Coil packs for cylinder 5 & 6 broke off in the engine..

While doing a spark plug replacement on my 2009 135i with 93,000 miles I was removing the coil packs for the last two cylinders closest to the firewall (I believe they are #5 & 6). well instead of popping straight out as the other 4 did they popped out minus the lower rubber portion that encases the spark plug......FML!! The coil pack severed right at the section where it makes contact with the spark plug. I spent the next two hours breaking apart the remaining rubber part around the spark plug with metal BBQ skewers and long neck needle nose pliers so I could get the damn plug out! What a nightmare!! I had to purchase two new coil packs from the local BAP import auto parts store (lucky for me they were in stock!) Has this ever happened to anyone else??

That sucks man. Mine have been tough to get off sometimes but I've never had that happen.

It was a bitch to get them out. I had to break away the remaining rubber boot that was still on the plug and fish out the pieces with pliers and a shop vac! I will never go over my recommended spark plug replacement interval again!

Yup, tore the boot on my #6 coilpack. Had to dig it out with some picks... sucked hard. :/

Heat doesn't do nice things to the coilpacks. This tends to happen alot with this ignition system design. Some more than others! Im glad you got it fixed! I need to change plugs soon as well!

It was definitely a learning experience! I'm changing my plugs at 40,000 mile intervals from now on.

Yup! It was totally my fault for putting it off as long as I did. I know exactly why the car was going into limp mode every couple of days now! Since I changed the plugs the car runs like new again.

When removing just about anything spray it liberally with PB Blaster and let it sit and soak!

I don't think that would have helped in my case. The part that broke off wasn't able to be seen until after the coil pack was removed and that came off just fine.
