Have trouble doing a burnout with a bolt on/tuned car?
First I will say that I haven't been driving high powered rear wheel drive cars my whole life, much of this I am willing to blame on myself, I am still learning. I cannot seem to do a burnout very easily. I always wait until everything is warmed before I attempt a burnout, I'm sure a burnout will be easier on cold tires, but I'm not going to strain engine/trans/diff in the process if I don't need to.
My problem is that the tires just seem to have absurd grip, which is a GREAT thing! This is bad for trying to intentionally break traction though, even though the car itself has insane levels of power and torque, and should be able to. I've looked up plenty of guides, practiced, and practiced. The problem I encounter is that one of a few things will happen: 1. The wheels won't break loose and the car will just roll forward fighting the brakes. I don't like doing this because it causes strain on the powertrain. 2. The wheels will break traction momentarily, but then immediately recatch and launch forward, even under wide open throttle while rolling on the brakes. 3. The tires seem more apt to break traction once I'm already moving with some speed involved, which is dangerous. Some things to keep in mind. I am on stock shocks currently, which were meant for run flat tires, so they probably help traction by increasing chassis squat. I have a few month old rear pads in conjunction with front pads that should probably be replaced soon. I think that's the ticket honestly, the front brakes don't seem to be biting like they should be. And yes DSC is completely off. Hold for 5 seconds, triangly doobly doo appears.

many automatics seem to have problems with it, something to do with cutting power while trying to stand on the brake

My interest in doing burnouts is not really so much for show, but just the fact that if I ever take my car to the strip, you are supposed to do a burnout on the wet patch before pulling up to the line. So what am I going to do, just tell everyone my car can't do a burnout because the ECU won't let me? Maybe manage a pathetic 1/4 tire spin and then launch toward the line. Everyone would laugh!

I have a manual trans and when I go to the strip I don't bother with a burnout. I figure I'm not on slicks (Michelin PSS), it's a street car, and I'm already taking enough life from the tires by drag racing it lol. I'm no expert though, but honestly I don't think it's worth it on street tires.

You can't really do it at all in an auto though. You'd have to mash the pedal without the brake and be halfway down the strip to spin the tires lol.

I actually had some decent burnouts today. The ground was wet, so I guess that helped. Also learned a valuable lesson. Don't shift an AT mid burnout. I had a great idea. Start the burnout in 1st gear, then shift to 2nd gear so you can sustain it longer. Well I did it, and when 2nd clutched in, the engine bogged down and made a not very pleasing noise. Guess I won't be doing that again. Anyway, I guess I'm closer to being able to do at least short burnouts more consistently. If I can nail a 1-2 second burnout fairly consistently, then I figure I can hit the strip and not be embarassed before I even hit the starting line.
I have an app that rates quarter mile times, but a friend of mine is stubborn and says that only strip times matter. I got a quarter mile time of 10.94s by the app, but he won't recognize it until I get an actual slip from a track. Any idea how accurate these GPS based timers are? Based on the car/mods in my sig, is that about what I should expect, or is that generous? I will say that during the launch that made that time, the car felt VERY fast and my shifts were perfect, so it wouldn't surprise me if it were accurate.

Hmm, I have a 6at with JB4. I dont really have a hard time doing a burnout. Just TIMYOYO, put it in first, mash the brake, and mash the gas for a couple seconds.

I have an 6AT and have no issue at all with doing burn outs. In first gear (2nd does not work for me, though I power brake in 2nd to launch) I apply brakes about 50% then slowly roll on the gas. Car jerks a moment and I apply enough brake to find a "sweet spot" to secure the car then apply more gas and it breaks loose just fine. With proper throttle control I can hold the rpms right at 5k and they will smoke right up.
Also still on RFT but will be switching to MPSS soon so I'll be able to tell if anything changes. |
