1M3 Clone 2.0 - The Build Log
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com This build will be the embodiment of several ///M cars, taking the components that I like best from each of the different chassis. This car is going to be a daily driver and a track rat. A true dual purpose car. It will make the occasional show appearance but that is not the focus of the build. I am aiming for weekly updates but, as we all know, it depends on the flow of work on the car. Special Thanks: This build is possible in no small part due to ilikebmxbikes original Clone 1.0. I was lucky enough to watch his car being built the entire way through and see the end result on the street and the track. He has also been patient enough to offer up his experience and with his guidance we are ready to kick this project off.

Phase 0 - The Donor Cars
With a little time and patience the donor cars have been secured. The E82 chassis is a 2009 135i in space gray. The interior is black and the options are very minimal (no nav here!). Finding one in this lightly options configuration was more difficult that I expected but the search is done.
The next step was to secure the E9x M3 donor. We did this via an auction for salvaged cars and found our donor. It took a hit in the rear but still runs and drives. Since we are after the drive train and sub frames I opted to stay away from cars that have taken a hit in the front where there could be possible damage to the components we needed. We lucked out on this car (knock on wood, never know until you peel back the layers of the onion). It is a very low mileage car and the air bags did not deploy. With the ever critical first step complete we can now turn our attention to the first true phase of this project - the body work.

Super excited! Best of luck with it.
I'm also interested in the logistics of parting out both cars, in thinking of doing this myself I couldnt help but imagine I'd have to rent a storage room and meet a bunch of people from craigslist to recoup costs. |

Phase 1 - The Body Work
The first phase of this project is going to be all about the body work. We will be converting over to a 1M body so that all of the E9x underpinnings will fit (wider track).
Definitely a few things worth noting about how we will be doing this conversion: 1. We will be using all OEM factory parts directly from BMW 2. We have a factory trained body technician in Anthony 3. We have access to all of the factory tools to do this type of work 4. We have access to all of the factory procedures for doing this type of work. The end result will be a conversion that is done perfectly to OEM factory specs (down to the finest details like body filler and the inner wheel wells etc) to the point that it will be indistinguishable/undetectable by all but the highly observant trained eye. We will be taking lots of pictures during the process and plan on a time lapsed GoPro video of the work as well. Should be an amazing video to watch! But... first things first, the parts have started to arrive...

The tear down on the E82 chassis is well underway as we make room for all of the new OEM panels it will be seeing in the not so distant future!
