Motiv Twin Plate Clutch Review
So I'm upgrading my low km (12k) clutch this week as the stock can't handle the
power at all, it slips on boost as the car is developing over 9000N of torque at the wheels. It doesn't slip as long as I'm under 17psi. Its not an everyday car, so I went with this clutch https://www.motivmotorsport.com/prod...sc-clutch-sst/ The reason is that the stock dual mass flywheel gives false knocks at high power levels and the dme pulls timing when it detects knock. There is other clutches that can hold the power but what is planned for the car and the power its going to develop eventually it will be a waste of time. The clutch looks amazing and very solidly built. Its a bit of a handful to drive as I have driven one before but nothing I can't get use to. I'm getting the clutch & flywheel dynamically balanced to help with chatter and keep the noise down to a minimum. I have to thank JD75 for organizing the clutch for me and supplying it at a very good price. He is also the Motiv authorised dealer. If anyone needs parts this guy is great to deal with. Little update. The clutch is working flawlessly, it does get a little grumpy sometimes and doesn't want to play nicely on take off like 1 out of 50 times. When the aircon is on it tends to rattle a little bit on idle only but turn it off and its almost silent. From low revs to high revs its ultra smooth, especially at low revs where the dual mass would be rattly the motiv is silky smooth but load it up at low revs and the cabin will resonate a fair bit. Going to try and get a TW_Damper and see if that will help with the rattle http://www.tuningwerk.de/tuningwerk/...sFZ3QMNgk4rnUw Last edited by martymil; 03-24-2016 at 08:42 PM.. |

Hopefully they can sort out the vibration issue I've had with the M3 driveline install |

Good idea going with the full face. When I ordered mine I didn't really have an option so I'm quite sure I got twin pucks which is a bitch with chatter. They do hold more power but to be honest, the extra probably isn't worth the loss in driveability.

Just one correction with regards your first post though, the OEM dual mass flywheel at high horsepower levels is prone to torsion that the DME incorrectly interprets as a misfire event and subsequently shuts the cylinder down in a rather nasty and abrupt way. This is most common on manual transmission vehicles making 350rwkW+ and usually occurs on cylinder 6 which just happens to be the cylinder closest to the flywheel, though I have seen a misfire event occur on cylinders 5 and even 4 too, but cylinder 6 is always the first one to exhibit the problem. The single mass flywheel that is supplied with the MOTIV twin-plate basket is as solid as rock, no chance of torsion, no false misfire, no problem. :-) Last edited by JD75; 02-22-2016 at 03:58 PM.. There is no way of upgrading the flywheel springs, the only upgrade is a single mass flywheel when your chasing big power.
New clutch fork arrived today, didn't take a pic but exactly same as this one Last edited by martymil; 02-23-2016 at 12:00 AM.. |

I will chime in here and say I m very happy with my MOTIV clutch that JD75 kindly supplied. Since the install it hasn't missed a beat and it solved the common misfire we were seeing above 350rwkW.
Not too noisy, though when hot after repeated harsh acceleration it does get a bit grabby, though it's a small price to pay for the superior clamping abilities. JD75 and Advan partnering up again for a great result. |

Well I picked up my car today and wow, almost like stock take off.
Little noisy when cold but after a 10min drive it sounds very quiet. Thanks to Billy for all his hard work and Cameron for helping to get the car finished. All I'm going to say is wow, i'm over the moon. |

No they couldn't balance a twin plate.
It almost feels like OEM but the take up is firm not soft You can feel the take up unlike stock, but it's not grabby like an on/off switch if that makes sense. |

They car drives really nice but you really have to keep the revs over 1800 rpm as the clutch gets a little noisy only when loaded up.
On idle it's actually pretty quiet, you can hear some gearbox rattle because of the clutch but you really have to listen I took a video but you can't hear it Reversing is a little tricky when going up a hill, it gets a little jumpy but that's a trade off I can live with Overall over the moon with this clutch, by far the best investment I made for the 1M yet Last edited by martymil; 03-24-2016 at 08:45 PM.. |

You would have to sit it on 1000 rpm to get rid of it
Once the gearbox oil gets hot it's practically silent most of the time Ok so I done the break in period already, the clutch gets tempramental sometimes and gets grabby, it's mostly when it's coming of a long drive like a hwy. In traffic it's not bad but you have to be patient and hold the friction point and she will take off by herself, if you try and give it gas it will launch like a bat out of hell. It's definetly nothing like oem after the break in period, but still very smooth. Take off can get tricky now and then and reversing is a bit of a biatch but overall it was the right choice and I would not get anything else. I've driven a lot of performance clutches over the years but this is the best thus far for street/track. Still haven't gone full throttle, I'll just have to wait till Wednesday at wsid |

Hmm sounds like a compromise in terms of driveability but hopefully will handle the torque for the N54 and those hard launches at WSID!! |
