Are DISA valve pins known wreck explode engines?
So, I'm about to pickup a DISA intake for my 128i. The DISA intake is from a 2008 328i N51 engine with high mileage.
I have read some things about the pins falling out and causing major valve/engine damage. Can they really be sucked up into the engine by the airflow or is this a 1 in a million chance type thing? (Are they plastic pins? metal?) I'll obviously be taking the valves out and inspecting them and possibly purchasing one of those aluminium a rebuild kits with the pins that can't come out into the intake. It depends on what I find. |

They are plastic and my original piece must have been sucked into the engine. No indication that has done any damage.
Also, the manifold appears to have been designed not to let the big DISA travel far very at all if it becomes completely free from the pin. Although it may block certain passages and starve the engine of air/stall it. Don't ask me how I know.

DISA valves were revised towards the later year N52s.
And according to a guy on E90post that sells many 3SI units, he stated that he has never seen later year DISAs (Revised part numbers) in bad shape regardless of mileage Last edited by sprp85; 06-03-2018 at 10:22 PM.. |

Not an expert on this, but as I understand it this is very rare. I used a low(60k.km., about 40k. miles) unit from, I believe an X3 or X5 N52 with an AA tune and don't anticipate any problems.

Is a 2008 considered a later year version?
