Coupe to convertible
I sold my 128i coupe last year and am looking to get back into one. I see a lot of convertibles out there. Anyone go from a coupe to convertible? Any real discernable performance differences? I'm open to any 1 series, 128i, 135i and 135is. Thanks!

The most noticeable performance difference is the extra 250 pounds
which is most noticeable during acceleration. Pro drivers can tell a difference in body stiffness (coupes are stiffer) but that has always been beyond my ability. Other items include noisier ride which never bothered me, and a 40% decrease in trunk space. The biggest positive for the convertible is nothing beats top-down driving. Sun roofs don't come close.

I went from a 'vert to the coupe. I enjoyed the 'vert, I had a good one. Few problems in the time I owned it, and the only options it had were the auto and leather. I just had to have the specific coupe I found, which had everything I really wanted in a 1 series. Otherwise, I would still be happily driving the 'vert.

I think you're seeing a lot of convertibles for sale right now because it's that time of year... selling a convertible right now is pretty much guaranteed to net you more money than selling any other time of year.
I just bought my 135i convertible and am loving every minute of it. It's replacing a motorcycle, so top-down was a requirement for me. Previous performance car was a mk7.5 Golf R and this seems just as quick, but a little more fun with the rwd aspect. Handling seems up to par, although I haven't pushed much yet. This is my first RWD car so trying to get a feel for things without looping it around. |

Honestly unless you're going to track the car on a regular basis the convertible will be fine and a lot more fun.

09 owner since 2012 when u bought it CPO w 12K. Has been a really enjoyable car. Not my daily but would enjoy it even more if it was. Like most have said, there’s not a lot of trade offs unless you plan on tracking. I’ve autox’d mine a bunch and it’s been great. There’s not many useable 4 seater Cabrios that compare with the E88. That’s what sold me.
