So what is (or was) everyone else considering?
Well since the news of the new 1 has come out many people have either changed their minds or added this car to the list of cars they plan on purchasing. What are the other cars on everyone else's list? Before I saw pics of the 1 my choices were:
1) New G37- prefer not to get another G since I already had one, I like change. I have also had issues with first year production Nissans as my 03 350z was bought back on lemon law. 2) 3 Series coupe- 335i was my first choice but I think it may be a little out of my current price range. 328i was nice but too slow coming from my G35. 3) Z4- love the car, but we already have a two seater and couldn't get by with another one. * Porsche Cayman- dream car and if I could somehow get this I would put up with the 2 seats hehe. I love the look of this car although it's not really an option since it is out of my price range. 4) 135i coupe- leading candidate so far for obvious reasons...:headbang: Lips

Hmmm. Great Post Lips.
My choices were as follows: 2008 Dodge Challenger 2008 Mitsubishi Evo X I would have loved a 2008 S2000 but Honda is going in another direction unfortunately.

2009 Evo X
2009 STi 2009 IS350 2009 135i - obviously now the leading canidate I want something I can track and drive daily. I know that is not possible without comprimises, but I think I can get close. My '04 STi was a little to loud inside, but it was a raw race car.:headbang: |

I was actually looking into the (soon to be released) 2008 MINI Clubman S. We want something a little bigger than our current MINI but since I plan on returning to Germany (as soon as possible ) I want something that'll handle the Autobahn as well as my (8L) A3 TQ did

1 - Cayman (S and not S)
2 - Corvette C6 Z51 (not Z06) 3 - Lotus Elise (but the boss will not put up with that car ; -). The 1er appears to be a 'value' pick at the moment. We should start hearing about media drives within 45 or so days. |

I'm kind of surprised by the choices so far. I would have thought more people would be looking at the 335, G37 or IS350...

This was my list prior to the 1er, pretty much in order of preference.
1. Mini Cooper S 2. BMW 328i 3. Audi A3 6. VW GTI 4. Merc B200 5. Impreza WRX While these choices are still on the table, the 1er, as a package, pretty much blows them all away from my POV. The Merc and the Audi are officially off the table - too soft. The GTI and Mini Cooper S are my lower-cost options, just in case I need them. The 328i is still on the table, but we have a Honda Odyssey, so space for the family is not an issue for the second car. When the time comes, I'll shop around and test drive everything on my list, but I already know nothing's going to touch the 1er...

I like others have put the 135i on the top of my list. I also would consider a G37.. especially if the new Skyline GT-R turbo components bolt onto it
I also heard that Porsche and Audi are collaborating on the next Boxter/Cayman platform with the Audi variant to be named the R4 (there will also be an R6 and R10 to join the R8) Thats quite a ways down the road (3 years at least) but it should be quite a car from Audi. For the same price as an IS350, I could pick up a 2004 IS300, swap a supra block and internals into it and add a turbo for an IS350whp. I <3 2JZ. |

Let me throw in a poor man's list, in no particular order.
1. MINI Cooper S lightly equipped 2. VW GTI 3. 328i with sports pack and xenon, if they screw up the 1er pricing 4. 128i with sports pack and xenon, if they don't screw up the 1er pricing 5. 135i with no option, if they REALLY don't screw up the 1er pricing 6. G35 sedan 6MT 7. VW Passat 2.0T if I turn out to be even more crazy about the upcoming little one than I think I will be. |

I've pretty much settled on the 128i as my next car (provided it has a Sport Package option, otherwise I'm going 135i). Here are the also-rans, in order of preference:

The only other new car I was considering was a Z4 3.0 coupe. I briefly kicked around the idea of a used Boxster, but I'm over that now. One possibility I'm still considering is picking up a really nice '87-'89 Carrera 3.2. I've wanted one since I was a kid, and it would make me just as happy as a brand new 135i, as crazy as that might sound to some people. An ///M1 would blow that idea right out of the water though, I'd be all over it. Are you listening, BMW?

First let me say that I knew the 1-er was coming- over a year ago, but there were so many conflicting rumors at the time...available only in US as a sedan was part of the buzz making the rounds...I wanted something that looked sporty as well as handled great.
1) BMW Z4...I've got one now, I thought about getting a new one. Great deals available (finally). 2) BMW 335...oh yeah, it's beautiful, and they still aren't discounting them. And it's a little too middle-aged guy who lives in the burbs for my tastes....no offense to m-agwlitb's. 3) Audi A3...the quattro version is overpriced. Why get an Audi w.out quattro? Actually a better ? is,"what is an Audi w-out quattro? (Hint: WV spelled backwards) 4) Volvo C30...again, no all-wheel drive option. Who needs a fast fwd? We've pretty much decided to get the 1-er 135i. Now it's just down to which color. She wants white w. coralred interior and I'm still holding on for Montego Blue with lemon. |
