Anyone went from 911 to 1M?

Curious if anyone here shifted from a 911 (im talking slightly older models that are like of similar years to 1M) and shifted to the 1M? Considering after 4 years in a 997.2 base carrera to try the 1M as an ownership and thinking if its better or worse in terms of limited practicality and fun factor, running costs, etc.

Appreciate anyone's take. My other former sports car experience is Z4 Coupe, and that too I ran for 4 years, without complaints.

I own a 1M and am considering adding a 997.2 S or Turbo to my garage. The previous vehicle to my 1M was a Z4M Coupe. I wouldnt sell the 1M but want to try a Porsche. Feel like it would be an entirely different experience.

I love the 997 but IMO outside of the GT3, I would take the 1M. GTS would be a debate for many.

As for practicality — 1M hands-down way more practical than any 911. Very usable backseat, large trunk, anchor bolts for roof racks, for a coupe…It’s about as practical as it gets.

Reliability Porsche is very hard to beat, 997 might be better, but if you don’t like the 1M, you can always just go back to a 997. Both will hold their values just fine.

My 911 has roof rack attachment points, not an issue. It is also fairly useable space wise but not as traditional.

The issue with 1M is having hard time find one to test drive! Need to order one, or few examples near me in Sweden are modified cars, but I think that will be a start. I need to try one to compare.

997.2 GTS for me is not worth the upgrade as not as useable.

Agree, values wise, both holding good. Both at bottom of depreciation curve. The 1M is quirky, and its either that or M2 today for me (the boxy one). But 911 is just special, though I feel like I need to experience cars in life, not sit in one. And a little useability wont hurt.

Turbo is a special car, I think not a comparison for 1M to me, the S though is very good alternative. After the covid craze 997s came down in values, as 991s now coming down and pushing everything a bit down, so you probably will get a deal. 1M has some funny unicorn status though, hence it just lives its own (parts bin) special life.

Saying what car works for you is hard, but for my experience in owning 911's an M2 and now a 1M.

1M is way more practical...Trunk>>>Frunk 1MBackseat>>>997Backseat.

Remember, 1M backseat folds down. This can be very useful!

As a 997 fan to say switch to a 1M is not the easiest choice. 997 is pretty awesome IMO. Many do it for the trunk and backseats, but sounds like you just want a change?

1M is quirky and special where I live, I see 997's every day they are everywhere, 1M just feels more special to me, and car people who know what it is find it pretty cool.

As for mods, I would not really want my 1M stock, I have M-Performance seats that I love and full exhaust. If you find one you like bring the mods here and ask about them, some might be worth it.

Good luck

Yes, it seems that in the last 6 months 997 values have dropped noticeable. I'm only looking at a 997.2 which are harder to find though.

1M will always be in my garage as I love the rarity and funny/confused looks I get in it.

I love the 1M, sometimes I wonder if I have outgrown a car like this at tender age of 42. Im looking at Taycans also..

For the 997.2 you get a 991.1 engine and 997 chassis and steering, I think it deserves a premium and if values have come off 10/20% from recent peaks its a good time to buy, IMHO. 997.1 is a bargain, but id only go TT because of the engine concerns Id forever have on it, jut like IMS on 996. But there is a thought out there that the bore scoring on 997.1 engine is overblown massively.

I dont hate the 997.2, I love the car. Im just getting silly ideas now to 1) lower it 2) paint the calliperrs that are tired looking and discolored 3) retrim the interior with houndstouth ... All of this is kinda madness and wont add value to the car, nor wont add much real daily enjoyment. Its just for looks. And there is a problem, when I start changing things in my car I usually take it as a sign as time to let go.

1M as I wrote also above, feels to me a little teenagery car and Im not a teenager anymore, kind of outgrown it in some way. But I think pictures always make it look cartoonish, may be in real life it is a different story. I have to find one to try it, they are kind of impossible to find on streets to look at but that part for me is most attractive, 997s are dime a dozen.

you're kinda going backwards honestly if you're attempting to unload a 911 for a 1M. Any generation of a 911 is worthwhile keeping. If you had initially said you have a boxster, cayman or a panamera, the 1M would be without a doubt a worthy replacement. The value will just continue to rise on the 1M as they age and they constantly need special care.

IMO, The best case for you is keep the 911 and add the 1M. Reassess a couple months later which one you like best and sell.

The 1M does not constantly need special care. It runs on one of the most widely used engines BMW made, the N54. The N54 requires regular maintenance of the high-pressure fuel system, spark plugs, and coils; thats it. If you want to track the 1M, it needs cooling upgrades to not go limp. The transmission in the 1M was carried over to the F8x M cars, albeit with twin-disc clutch and auto-rev-matching.

I've never owned a 911, but I have changed the oil on one before and I can assure you that maintenance on the 1M is easier. Though I know most 911-bois don't get their hands dirty.

I did actually, but not really. I’m on my second 1M, my first one was an Alpine white which I sold to buy a 991.2 CGTS. Perfect car for street and great capabilities to chase GT3s with the RAS and the torque from the TT 3.0. Then sold the GTS because my dealer gave me an allocation for a 991.2 GT3 RS. Almost 2 years ago I bought my second 1M, BSM, mint condition with 30k km and remembered what the 1M is about. The 3RS is the perfect car and I never get tired of it, maintenance is “cheap”, I change the oil and air filters every 5k km and that’s all, but the 1M is something else I didn’t fully understand 8 years ago until now, such a analog, nimble with very fast cornering speeds, lots of torque and recently I installed the Cup 2 Connect star marked from the M2CS, added a bit more camber at the front by removing the little pins in the shock mounts and turned into a very very fast and super fun car on the street and highways.

I’m fortunate to have them in my garage, but since I got the black 1M, I’m not using as much as before the RS, 8 times out of 10 I choose to take the 1M instead because it’s so much fun to drive!
