You'll probably have one... YES, just tuck the top of the boot over a little and it will retain nicely under the Performance Shift Knob. You don't need to zip tie, glue or anything.

Here's a completion pic. Not the best, but it gets the message across.

It works well, but I'm getting the alcanara boot anyway

Overall, it's a GREAT improvement over the stock knob. This being shorter and weighted gives a more direct and connected feel. My only worry is the wear the alcantara bits will have over time.

Should you do it? YES!

I don't see why not at all.

All that should change is the throw angle. The retention slot should be exactly the same. Even if there was a height difference, the boot will make up the slack.

by the way, this isnt easy to make it look like its normal for this car! but with a lil work it can be a beautiful addition!

I will have a brand new knob and boot for sale in the Alcantara, from the SSK. (Keeping my M Sport knob and booth because I love them, just wanted the shorter throw)

Hi all,

Does the link for details on step 1 work for anyone? I'm trying to replace the stock knob on my 2012 128i (sport pkg, no m pkg) with the m knob and am having some trouble.

I'm not so sure if it will just pop off with force like I've read it should - I've given it a few pretty good pulls but it doesn't seem to be budging If anyone has replaced just the knob on their 128 and could give me a pointer I sure would appreciate it.

OK, so I got everything off......just to find out that the ZHP knob probably isn't going to work out. (attached pics)

If the ZHP knob didn't have the metal bottom, it would slip right in. I suppose I could remove the inner ring from the boot and fold the boot over, but I would rather not.

Anyone know how I could make this work?

This is exactly what I feared. My knob still hasn't arrived yet. I will let you know how my experience goes when it does.

Edit: Did you get it in place and give it a good whack to snap it in? It's not meant to slide in.

I definitely could have snapped it onto the stick, but with the metal ring around the base of the new knob, it wouldn't be attached to the boot since the metal ring at the bottom of the new knob will not fit into the ring at the top of the boot, so not only would the top of the boot be exposed, but the boot would most likely slip down without being connected in some way to the knob.

I guess the answer is to use Qube's method of removing the ring at the top of the boot and fold it over - unless there is a way to get the metal ring off of the bottom of the new knob (inside of the metal ring is identical to the stock knob - it has the compressed plastic piece with 4 slots)....but I think it is all one piece

Guys read the thread from the top. There are steps at the top of this page that tell you how to remove the plastic part that's in the boot and stopping any other knob from fitting. Remove it and it all works. OR buy another boot without it.

As much as I didn't want to, I had to remove the plastic ring on the boot. I then zip tied it to make it look as clean as possible. Here's mine.
