Mine does the same, both off and on!
Some will say its the clutch, but its not (makes no difference whether the pedal is depressed or not. I think there are 2 possibilities: 1. Slightly loose heat shielding on / near exhaust system (my turbo Golf did the same thing) 2. Wobbly wastegates (some US cars suffer from this) |

Mine does it too, freaked out a few months ago, cos I couldn't remember whether it was there from new, the dealer charged 2 hours of labour to check everything and make sure nothing was loose.
Still not sure what it is, but sounds like an exhaust rattle to me. |

manual, will check tomorrow re clutch in making a diff.
thanks for the feedback. sounds common. will be interesting to know if the 125s do it. i have come to the conclusion that it sounds like a diesel with a throaty exhaust when it shuts down! |

It's the clutch. Mine has done it since day one. Hefty clutches do that I was told. BMW also said it was normal. (Take that with a grain of salt lol.)

The manual actually says to have it in gear before turning off. So, obviously clutch has to be depressed. I doubt it hurts transmission.

The noise on shutting down the engine without depressing the clutch is only your clutch release(throwout) bearing rattling as there is no load at the time in neutral with the clutch disengaged. The bearing reduces friction between the pressure plate levers and the release fork to allow a smooth disengagement of the clutch plate during gear changes. |

Yeah I've got it.
Gears rattle against each other when there is no load. You should hear how noisy the gearboxes can be with idling BMW race engines with big cams and rough idle. Last edited by TimMc; 05-04-2010 at 02:35 AM.. |
