What does this button do? - Is it Active Steering?
Quote:
Ok. Sorry in advance if this info is somewhere in the forum already, but I haven't been able to find an answer and my curiosity is killing me. For days, I've been admiring all the cars in the Official Le Mans Blue thread over in the Photos and Videos forum while I anxiously await the arrival of my own Le Mans 135i. I came across this picture of garreth64's 123d center dash panel. What is the function of the button right next to the right heated seat button? Anyone? Thanks. |

When the car comes to a stop (say at a light) it will automatically turn the engine off to save fuel. I believe it automatically restarts when you get off the brake and touch the gas.
Another cool "efficient dynamics" feature that they get in European 1ers that we don't in NA is the brake regeneration. I like this feature more: http://www.bmw.com/com/en/insights/t...eneration.html "With Brake Energy Regeneration, BMW EfficientDynamics points the way to a more energy-efficient future. As soon as you brake or take your foot off the accelerator, the kinetic energy is captured and fed to the battery. This reduces the amount of power the battery takes from the engine and hence lowers fuel consumption. When the driver presses the accelerator, on the other hand, the alternator is decoupled from the drivetrain. With fewer components drawing power from the drivetrain, more of the engine's output can go into accelerating the car." Wonder if this has performance advantages as well as fuel savings... |

I thought that the brake regen and alternator decoupling were on US 135s? Might be wrong on that tho.

Thanks! That makes sense. A few months back I was looking at Mini Coopers and they all had a blank button down by the gear selector. When I asked one salesman what it was, I now recall him mentioning that it was for an option that was not available in the U.S. (auto start/stop). I remember him making a joking remark about the lawyers here in U.S. not allowing it. To be honest, I don't think I would want my car turning itself off when stopped, although I see the fuel savings reasoning.

I've got it in my 123d vert. It does turn the Auto Start/Stop off. The Auto Start/Stop kills the engine when you are stopped in neutral with your clutch out (only available with MT). As soon as you put your clutch in before engaging a gear, the engine automatically restarts.
Cheers, Alf

That's cool that you can disable/enable the auto shut-down of the engine.

Why would that make a difference. The HVAC console is above the CD player on the center stack.
On my car it the other way around. Radio on top HVAC below. |

also cars with nav have the 6 memory keys. the auto start/stop function looks like it has the potential to be very annoying. I understand that it is coming over on 2011 M3s.

i believe the current M3 was the original engine with this alternator disconnect feature. maybe that's only the euro version of the car though. I never read where that was being done, but i know it's supposed to be the M3

All m3's built since last month (U.S. market) have the auto stop/start and brake regen feature.
