Intercooler water spray

Did any of you tried IC water spray on 135i

Looks cheap, and should help summer hot days

Had waterspray on my old Subaru. Does it make a difference? Probably. Will you notice? No. If youre going through all of the trouble to mount a tank and pump in the trunk and run lines to the engine bay, you might as well get meth instead.

What track are you going to that is cool with you dumping water all over the racing surface?

When I had the MINI I had a nitrous sprayer on the intercooler. We ran the car on the dyno with and without the sprayer. I had a continuous spray on the car from the entire run just to see what would happen. There was ice built up on the intercooler.. and the dyno's showed 1 HP increase. maybe its different with the water and the air raveling through the IC.. we had a Fan going through the IC.. I dunno..
I think there is money better spent elsewhere. just my 2 cents.

I'm not talking about HP increase, just to avoid heatsoak in hot summer days, because with stock intercooler you can really feel loss of power after hard drive. Especialy when your boost is increased with some tune.

I'd go with a better than stock intercooler versus spraying the stock intercooler. My buddy's e92 has consistent IAT after his HPF intercooler versus the stock one. Heat soak is still there, but not as bad.

"dumping"? A properly set up sytem is misting and evaporating almost instantaneously upon contact. A cheap set up not done properly might 'dump' water on the tarmac.

A buddy of mine got an earful from his race intstructor at a local track day for using the OEM sprayer on his Evo. No sprayer will put gallons on the track, but on a slick tire car all it takes is a little puddle in the wrong spot to cause a bad things. At the very least you are going to be very unpopular with the people you are sharing the track with.

An upgraded intercooler will do you good.. My MS3 had bad heatsoak being a top mount.. but once I upgraded to a front-mount.. even on 100 degree days sitting there in traffic, my BATs would go up to 150 or so degrees.. The moment you start moving again it plummets fast and will get to prime temps before you know it.. Definitely not worth the hassle of water spray.

They put an OEM one on the car for a reason. They are not designed and installed for driving at 40mph to take the kids to little league practice. EVO's are known for going from the showroom to the track. Many drivers use them for racing applications, this is nothing new. As I said, if its not working the way it should, there could be dripping. But cars that drip oil or boil over coolant or drip condensation from AC's or any fluids on a track will hear it from other drivers/officials. If its leaking enough to cause complaints, fix it. Pretty simple.

Been to quite a few track events with my Corvette and various venues, I've seen guys who use them and never heard a word about em, other than the curiosity and guys asking questions about em. No bitching by track officials, not asked to get off the track, nothing.

Had one on the Mini as well (non-nitrous). Since you could tap the rear windshield reservoir it was a fun mod to do but no measurable gains. The best Mini mod was to put a 5lb bag of ice on the IC between auto x runs. Also helped keep the beer cold.

Many racing bodies ban any device that sprays liquid onto your intercooler explicitly. That's a problem for cars that come with intercooler water misters from the factory.
