Question about software tunning.....
I had posted this on my original "just for my 135 thread" but I think I need advice from the experts here.
After I finalized my deal - the sales manager had earlier been talking to me about tuning on the car....so he came up to me and said he had spoken to he's buddy that is a bmw engineer and said we usually char 1250 for a software tune but we'll do it for 750 and would increase my HP by 100. i said "awesome, I rather get this done at the dealership with specialist especially for the price" he went on to say "no no no, its not associated with the dealership - something on the side" I respectably declined, that I needed to do some research before I pull the trigger for something I wouldn't be able to hold a company accountable for. He did give me a general idea on what they do.... he said most I would need to change is something (AFE brand) and the rest would be software tunning, since they have all the codes and know what to tweak and tune. So a week later and a lot of research on these forums, I feel like this may not be fictional....I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, maybe he doesn't realize the 2012 is a n55 engine and not a n54 - but I havnt seen any of those gains on these forums on a n55 on just software tunning. or maybe I got lucky, landed the right connection.... thinking of giving him a call and asking more questions - what questions should I ask him? reason I'm willing to even entertain the idea after what I've raid here, because at the end of the day why would he risk he's job if he was to make out with my money. |

Few things
1) He obviously doesnt realize you have a N55, not a N54, since the N55's just dont make quite the same power as the N54. 2) You should tune up your N55 anyway, it will still be a nice fast car tuned. 3) You sound like a conservative person who may not want to rip apart the engine bay to install a piggy back so you may want to wait for the Cobb N55 tune which is programmed by the home user using a handheld programmer plugged into the ODB port. |

Ok people need to get clear about the whole Dinan and BMW warranty. BMW does not have any agreement with Dinan about Warranty. It is the delaership that happens to be an Authorized Dinan dealer. When you flash your car with the Dinan software, the engine warranty is voided and the Dinan warranty will take over. your Vin number will be flagged in the BMW NA data base and you will not be able to purchase extended BMW warranty down the road.
Obviously your Sales manager does not know jack shit. 100 hp gain can not be done by software only even on N54. For a 100hp delta you need DP, FMIC, Meth, and the list goes on. Also, you have an N55 and it is no where near the N54 aftermarket variety. My advice is wait for Cobb or GIAC. Dinan is too expensive.

If you're not the kind of guy to go poking around in the engine bay, and if BMS fixed the problem, the JB+ chip for the N55 is possibly the easiest thing you can do, and nets you an instant 40-50 hp. It's easier than an oil change. It's easier than an intake filter change. It's probably easier than turning on the car and pulling out of your driveway. And no codes on the default setting.
Your sales guy doesn't know much apparently. I'd also just be weary in general of EVER mentioning your car having a tune to anybody who works for BMW. It could get back to the warranty people and you could be put in a bad spot should a warranty issue ever arise..

Stay away from the dealer... I bet they just throw a JB or Procede on it... stick around here, read up as much as you can, and make your own educated decision about what to do.
