Misfires...come clean with resolution
So with all the drama about the various tunes causing misfires what has caused and/or solved your problem the most; bad gas, old plugs, bad coil, bad injector or bad HPFP?
We all know that some injectors and most HPFP have recalls and should be the first thing to look into. That and the stock plugs while good should be replaced more frequently. So that leaves bad gas or does the stock coil or injectors fail MUCH more prematurely on tuned cars? Do all N54s (335iS and 1M included) share the same plugs/injectors/coils/HPFP?? Just looking for some real solutions not speculation. Thanks |

I am having that same issue with the COBB. When I get on the throttle pretty aggressively the car seems to hiccup. Almost like when your tires spin and you lose traction then you feel them grip and it gives you a slight jolt forward. Then if I "really" push it to WOT at high RPM's the engine goes into a limp mode and starts stuttering under any acceleration. Code says its a misfire in cylinder 6. Took car in to BMW 2 days ago and told them what was happening (excluding the tune and after removing it of course). Talked to the SA yesterday and he said "the plugs looked fine, we're having an injector issue, so thats being replaced and were gonna change out the HPFP again." Sounds fine BUT COBB just released new software thats suppose to take care of that problem. So was it really the injector of fuel pump? Who knows? Just can't wait to get it back so I can re-install the AP and see if the problem went away no matter if it was the tune, injector or HPFP.

Yes. All N54s take the same pump. As I recall, it's the same as the N55 a well.

Versus other tunes, it looks like DINAN increases the water pump speed with their tunes (see below) but doesn't require any change in coil, plugs or injectors.
Stage 1 (360hp / 373lb/ft) but does not require any addional hardware. Stage 2 (378hp / 416lb/ft) requires oil cooler. Stage 3 (398hp / 429lb/ft) requires oil cooler and performace intercooler. |

Was having misfires a few weeks ago. They would happen more running Map 1 vs Map 0 (V5 stock map). After about a week, they started to even happen while running Map 0.
Changed plugs and walla, no misfires ![]() Every situation may be different, but other than trying to get better fuel first (just becasue its easier) plugs should be the next thing to look at. |

My first misfire was solved following pump/injector recall... my second one was solved with new plugs.

I have the Dinan Stage 3 and I've been having similar issues under high load... Kinda feels more like a boost issue than a misfire though. Threw a CEL and SES light last week and took it to the dealer on Friday. They weren't much help as they just said, "we cleared the code, you can go now". Gee thanks.... Taking the car into my tuner shop (European Road and Racing) and hope they can help me out. Would have taken it to them first, but since the car is still under warranty figured I'd try the dealer first. The good thing is that European Road and Racing is a Dinan dealer (and they do awesome work) so the car will be in good hands...

Im running the new cobb aggressive map andI had a few issues getting bad gas from cheaper stations. The car would stutter and it threw a few codes. Now I switched to running verified vp fuel 100 octane mixed with verified 91 to get 94 and have no issues, no hiccups, just loads of power!!!!!

Looks like it was a misfire... My CEL read cylinder 5 misfire. Had the plugs changed out and #5 was definitely fouled. Car seems to be better but need to see how it goes for the rest of the week to see if it was just the plugs or possibly injectors as well.

Plug interval on 1M and 35iS is...??
Worn out plugs so it seems is a likely cause and cheapest fix to boot. Makes sense that the enhanced tunes would just induces the situation a bit more prematurely than the OEM tune would.
Anyone know if spark plug replacement is 45k on the 1M and 35is as well? They are running more aggressive tune and more boost. |
