Discuss: Will the lighter F80/F82 M3 with I-6 tempt you away?
I have to say, I see the possibility of being tempted in 4 years or so.
That said, I would ideally love to keep the 1M (which will be fully paid off) and get on a F80. 4 doors will be handy for us by then. I like the idea of the lighter, I-6 M3 that will definitely carry some of the 1M DNA (happy tail, Gobs of torque, bad-ass looks) Of course, I'm really interested in the possible Tri-turbo as well http://www.f30post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=694375

Same for me! I want to keep the 1M, it'sfully paid in 3-4 years! The 1M is a special car, and my first M ever!!
Then In 2016 or so, i will get the M4, i don't need 4 doors!! But, who knows,,which cars are coming until 2016... a Z4 M |

"Discuss: Will the lighter F80/F82 M3 with I-6 tempt you away?"...
Show me one BMW (other than the 1M and marginally the new 328i four) that is lighter than its predecessor. I don't believe the new F8x will be any lighter than the current 3er(F30). And BTW... I don't think we will see a tri-turbo engine. I think that was just a ruse used for the M550d to divert attention from BMW going back to an in-line six (twin turbo). What IF my screen shot(lap top) is really ture? 450 PS in the next F8x M3. I wonder what engine the new M2 will get??? Perhaps a detuned version? Or maybe a twin turbo four like some rumors suggest. |

I will certainly be interested to drive it. But I doubt I will buy one, unless they really give me that much more enjoyment than the 1m. The 1m is plenty fast in stock form for me, that may fade, but probably not any time soon. I see the 1m as a keeper really. I will likely look to get something more practical to park next to the M3 at some point, and I don't think another turbo charged BMW would fit that bill all to well. Who knows though, the idea of a car that will likely be faster and more comfortable than my 1M with 4-doors certainly sounds nice. I love my car though. I have been without it for a week and it sucks. |

So apples to apples the new car weighs in more than the old one. This point was kind of lost when BMW was trumping that the new F30 is lighter than the old e90. Only the 328i turbo four is lighter. Not the 335i. |

besides the 1M, did BMW ever make a 1 year only M car? M3 is nice, but I think BMW makes way too many of them for a special production car and the weight has crept up on them. Very happy with the 1M so far!!

No, they did not. Closest would be the Z3M vert and coupe(shooting brake) and the Z4M vert and Z4M Coupe. All of those were three or four year model year runs.

the F30 335i may not be lighter than the E9X 335i but if BMW does not make the F80 M3 lighter than the E90 M3 despite all the complaints regarding the M3 weight's evolution then BMW will have a big problem .

One could argue that the special edition M3s (CSL, GTS) were limited edition, one year models.
Dackle, you make a good point about the 4-pot being the only weight saver in the F30. However, even keeping the 335 within the same ballpark in terms of weight relative to the previous generation is a step forward isn't it? Also, wouldn't you see similar benefits by switching from a V8 back to an I6? I'm guessing that this will be a M GMbh designed and built 'S' engine? Since is seems likely there may be an 'M Sport' version of the new 3-Series, I could also speculate that BMW will further differentiate the M3 by using more CF in the car. They've clearly indicated that this is going to be one of their primary strategies to increase fuel efficiency. I'm going to bet you a nice, cold mug of Spaten Marzen Oktoberfest that the F80/82 will be lighter than the lesser 335 counterparts! After all, our 1Ms are lighter than the 135s, so we know it can be done. See you at Oktoberfest '14

What I find more impressive is that BMW still manages to increase the rigidity of the chassis without increasing the weight... too much

The new M3 looks great and it could be a possibility to switch over the that platform.
What really interests me though is if this things is a I6 twin turbo..... Clearly it will be a bigger liter motor maybe 3.3l or 3.5 But the turbos might be interchangeable to our 1M This would be great. Im definitely going to jack the new fueling system if i can because it will definitely be an upgrade over the old school N54 HPFP and LPFP |

the new M3/4 are planned to differ significantly from their AG "sisters". BMW will use a lot of their light-weight / carbon technology which should result in a weight of 1400kg. Let's see if they can live up to that

A 1400 kg M3 would be awesome, but I doubt it will happen.

450hp does seem like it will need to be bigger than 3 liters. Scaling up the n20 would only be 360hp. But I would hope they do the M3 motor a little differently where it won't tail off above 5,000 rpm. If it pulls linearly to redline, you might get to 400hp. But to get 450, 3.3l or 3.5l seems indicated.
I don't like the idea of turbos and haven't owned one yet. But I really like the idea of higher gas mileage and I also like the torque of the BMW turbo. So unless I just want to drive what I have forever, it seems like only a question of when I buy a turbo motor. Stated another way, I think I'd rather have a turbo I-6 with ~5mpg more gas mileage (my guess) than a V8. But the e92 V8 is nice. When you wind it up over 5000rpm it pulls strong and sounds great. We know 450 PS is possible (1Kw = 1.36 PS DIN, so 332 Kw = 452 PS) from this screen shot. We just don't know how much boost. Last week the 135iS was confirmed that is shown in this screen shot. I think this "1M engine" will be what shows up in the next M3. In time we will know. |
