1 year service question
Hi,
I just did the 1 year service last week. What they did was a oil change. So is that all? I thought they need to change the transmission oil and diff oil too? Or when will those oils get changed? Thank you

And what is a 1 year service? Never heard of a 1 year service, there is just 1200 mile/2000 km. service and after that condition based service.

I remember either transmission oil or diff oil need to be changed at 1200 mile service. But I read someone said US is not going to change transmission oil or diff oil at 1200 miles. I dont remember which one... what I meant for 1 year service is dealer change your motor oil for free every year.

1200 mile service is diff oil change.
I paid for an engone oil change as well. They just wanted to top up the oil.

Is this something you arranged with your dealer?

BMW NA will pay for an oil change once per year. Or they pay for an oil change every 15K miles - which ever comes first. Every year you can also request new wiper blades(complete wiper blades) and a new pollen filter.
The diff oil gets changed every 45K miles or third oil change(if low miles and the car is not driven that often/much). I would change the trans fluid too, but bmw says it is a lifetime fluid. Brake fluid gets changed every two years regardless of miles.

That must be a BMW South Africa thing that most of just learned thanks to your post. You should definitely get a full engine oil and filter change (not just top up) at 1200 miles (very probably and preferably a manual transmission fluid change as well since BMW AG suggests this too and most of the globe follows this recomendation, NA being a major exception). Did you check what is written in your car's manual, section maintenance, before taking the car to dealer for 1200 miles service? Mine says it clearly plus I got a confirmation e-mail directy from Munich BMW aftersale technical department which finally convinced my stubborn, totally ignorant (and beautifully indifferent) dealer here in Santiago, Chile. I would be surprised that SA manual states just the diff oil change at 1200 miles. My money goes to, you got a bad service station, which makes you a proud member of a large club of BMW 1M owners!

I think its common knowledge. I live in the land where you pay for every little thing when it comes to servicing a BMW! Germany. A simple oil change costs about $300 over here! Buy I have read it before on 1Addicts that wiper blades and pollen filters are a free - once per year service in the states. Also a free oil or coolant top up is common too - between services.

Only if they first made you pay a huge markup they might throw in some candy afterwards, no ?

Sorry, this made me curious; are you talking about a 1M or a M3 (your sig mentions a M3)? As far as I know that is pretty early mileage for changing spark plugs and air filter for a N54 engine. Any particular reasons for this change?

1M (don't know what's going on with the sig). But it has 19.5k miles and has the remap and the parts are changed on condition rather than time. But I was surprised that the plugs were changed to be honest.

(BMW pays)Every 45K miles. IF your car is tuned... I would replace them every 25K miles.

Just realised I had been signed in with an old username - from 2007 when I may have been looking at an M3 - indeed I had a deposit I for one before they were released and withdrew it when I drove one. Then got a CSL instead - but that's another story
