How Many People Have Custom Start/Stop Bezels?

Hey guys,

As a former 2008 135i owner with the engraved "Year One of the 1" start/stop bezel, as I'm ordering a 2013 135is, I'm considering doing something special with the start/stop bezel. I've seen some of the orange ones, but curious how many people have painted theirs to match the color of their cars or had custom engraving done on them. And if painted, how much prep work is needed, if at all?

I saw one member who had painted theirs blue to match their car and looked pretty good, wonder what it'd look like in Mineral Grey as a nice lil custom touch. Thanks for any info/help. I'd almost try to put a year one of the 1 back on, but seems tacky if on a 2013.

It would probably look really good mineral grey. I would look at Mr Mitaku's DIY for installing his 1M orange ones as an install guide and order a second OEM one to paint to preserve your original. I can't imagine a new one would be expensive.

I would not do a year one of the 1 on a car manufactured outside if the first production year.

Guess I'm nostalgic. Found the entire start/stop button and bezel for like $60 online, but haven't found just the ring yet. Wish I could find the picture of the one the member painted blue, really stood out and looked nice, so I think a mineral grey using the touch up paint will look pretty good, better than a carbon fiber, and if I screw it up or looks crappy, easy fix.

If you guys do this, let me know, as I'd love to know what prep work you do, steps, all the fun details.

Also, if anyone finds where to just buy the ring. I imagine a SGM will also give me a great idea of what a mineral grey one would end up looking like too. So by all means, I may use you guys somewhat as guinea pigs. O=)

Small lil project but adds a nice lil personal touch and makes the fun button stand out.

Hey guys. That's my 1er with the blue one. This is the prep work I did. None. Haha. I got the chip repair kit from the dealer for $30 so it was the same color and just started painting the ring. I did 3-4 coats of it. The first 2 coats you could see the brush strokes with the metallic flakes. After all the coats of paint I did 3 more coats of the clear coat that comes with the chip repair kit. Held up very good so far. I did chip it though. I was in a hurry and jump in and reached to hit the button and my finger slid across it while it was pushing down an my fingernail caught the ring. It did chip it but it just looks like the clear coat. Can't tell to much unless you stare at it. I used a regular paint brush to out it on. If you cut out something out of a sticker. You could put it on under the paint and it would give that raised lettering look and say whatever you want it to.

Mr Mitaku has a DIY video on here somewhere for his orange M bezel rings showing how to get them off. He used a very small screwdriver, almost like one you use to tighten screws on a pair of glasses, and put some painters tape on it as well to prevent damaging anything and just gently went under it and worked his way around and it popped right up. And when done, it just snaps right back down. Scares me a bit to do, but watching the video, looked pretty simple and easy and hard to screw up or damage anything.

As much as I do like my Red vinyl wrapped bezel, I wish I could find a red start/stop Button to replace the black button and go back to a silver bezel......
