On the iDrive screen, within the climate control section, there is a selection for vent settings that includes a convertible mode.
When this is selected, I believe that the heater will route hot air to those rear seat vents. Of course, to check this in the summer you will have to crank the temp up very high. Please check the manual to confirm. I am fairly sure, but not 100% positive, and I am out of town, and can not check it myself. Please test it as I have indicated and post your findings.

I haven't had anyone in the back seat yet so I wouldn't know, I'll check it out tomorrow though.

Is this the same for a 128i vert? And what if you don't have iDrive?

I won't be back home until next week, so I'm glad you are going to check it out. Also, let's see if the top needs to be down to activate the rear vent, or if it makes no difference.

The vent between the seats is an air return vent. It allows air out of the cabin when the windows and top are up. It does not blow air into the cabin. The vents under the front seats provide both heating and cooling to the back seats both in auto mode or when the fan is being controlled manually.
Regarding the convertible mode, you do not need to turn that on. If the air handling system is in auto mode and the top is opened, the convertible mode activates automatically. That adjusts temperatures (both heating and cooling) based on sensors located in various parts of the car, the sunlight hitting the car, and the speed of the car.

My friends who sit in the back somewhat often feel the heat comming out of that vent.
