Full-sized spare?

Question for Gill (or anyone who has some intelligent thoughts on the matter.)

1.) Let's say I wanted to purchase a tire-wheel combo to act as a full-sized spare to go along with the staggered 18" wheel pattern with the 135i. Should I get one to match the size of the rear wheels (245/35-18), the front wheels (215/40-18), or some compromise size in between? (Keeping in mind that this would be for a dedicated spare tire, and would only be used in the interim while a flat was being fixed.)

2.) Same question, except with 128i+sport package (205/50-17, 225/45-17).

(Yes, yes, I know the car comes with run-flats, but eventually they'll wear out, and I will likely replace them with non-run-flats.)

I would go with the lower size.

Maybe before those runflats are totally worn out, buy new rims, and keep them as the full size spare. Then when a tire blows, just order a replacement from Gill.

1 Problem with our 135i Sport staggered 18" is adding a "new" tire to replace the blown tire. We almost have to replace both tires.

If you blow a back tire, you replace both back tires for even wear and a good ride. Same with front. That's what I have read so far.

So those of us who have tire insurance, that is an issue. The other issue I am not clear on is this;

Say I have purchased 4 x Bridgestone Blizzak LM-22 17" tire and rims from tirerack. I get a blowout and even the rim is toast. I go to BMW dealership and they replace it.... but with what? They do not carry Blizzak and they certainly do not have a match for my rim.

I wonder what the dealership with do to me??? They promised me that I am covered... LOL but I am guessing again sales does not match service... hmmm

Dealer agreement with tire&rim purchase saids they ONLY cover winter tires for the first year and ONLY the rim & tire purchased at the dealership. External rim & tires, as some other posting put it... you are (TIM-YOYO).

I didn't get BMW tire insurance, my dealership offered me a 5 year insurance from another company, for these very reasons.

Oh, which company? I found one from another BMW dealership in the US, but they didn't offer their insurance to Canadian Customers.

Garage List
2008 135i  [6.50]
Unless you happen to have a spare wheel and absolutely have to save money, I would forget the full size spare and get a donut (LeatherZ). Even that will eat up space in the trunk, but a lot less than a full size spare.

Better have Yoda in your trunk when you go to the dealer with that problem. The dealerships have a special room where they take problem owners for "re-education".

For a full size spare I would use the front tire size. Either would be OK since the overall diameter is what you're trying to match.

That said, I wouldn't spend more for the rear to serve the same purpose.

I had the same dilemma with my track wheel/tire setup. I bought a used donut spare from Bavarian used parts (www.usedbmwparts.com) for $75. LeatherZ wants $245. And actually, it was just old, not used. Came with a 6-month guarantee. But remember, a spare won't do you any good without a jack and tire iron, which as you know the 135i does not have.

No I plan to let Yoda drive, and I will hide in the trunk. This is what happens when I tried the Jedi Mind Trick...

My previous 330ci had the staggered front/rear sizes and the factory spare which was full-sized was the same as the front wheel/tire. So Gil's suggestion above corresponds to what the factory used to do in the good old days before runflats!

The old donut spare I purchased from Bavarian fits easily. It is a steel 17" wheel with +30 offset. Those donuts were built in mass qty's to fit just about any BMW wheel/car combo.
