Bugger! Looks like I was tempting fate afterall. Mine has now developed a crack. And we have been really careful with closing the boot since I first read of this issue. It's still in one piece so far.

I was following a 135 down the freeway the other day who's brake light was completely smashed. looked terrible, I couldn't put up with it myself, I'd be into the dealer to get it replaced VERY quickly.

I thought this was an issue known to BMW and they will fix it under warranty for the earlier cars? The 'time to failure' was extended in your case(s) only because you were extra careful...

It is a known issue, I called BBMW after my detailer noticed the crack and they replaced it for me in a couple of hours while I had a coffee and read a book.

After over a year, I though it wouldn't, but it now has. Just discovered the seemingly inevitable brake light cover crack.

Just in time for 1st service which is due soon.

I hate to resurrect ancient threads but I was of the belief that this known defect had been rectified. After joking about this exact defect with Rowdy135 last night while looking at my car I noticed, to my surprise, that part of the lense had broken away on the right hand side. Closer inspection found another vertical crack around 1cm from that too. Now it's hanging on by like a thread! Not impressed as I did think that this problem had been sorted considering my car is only 6 months old. So, presumably it is still an ongoing concern with not just early models but later ones too. I felt it was important that other owners may also want to check their own cars once more, or even regularly too? I only open my boot once or twice a week maximium and it's gone already! I haven't dared to open it yet as I reckon it will fall out soon.

Tried to get it replaced on the spot but they went on about hooking it up to diagnostics and needing to book it in because it's a warranty job...! Lord only knows what happens when it actually falls out and there's no third brake light - safety issue - defect etc...

That's the biggest load of bull I've heard. You do not need 'diagnostics' to figure out that the brake light is going to fall out. They should definitely be replacing it for you on the spot, even if it means unscrewing a new one from a car on the showroom floor.

Yeah tell me about it! I actually rang my local dealer first and got told that rubbish. I then rang the next closest but hung up before they answered fearing the same response. I decided to just rock up at that other dealership instead and question if it could be done while I wait. Surprise surprise, the same response again in person...Unable to book it in this week so we'll see how long it lasts before it either fails or falls out! Can't do much about their ideas though as it's well out of my way and inconvenient to go to any other dealership for something so minor (well minor in the respect of it surely only taking minutes to swap over!).

I was once told at the service dept that BMW are so tight-assed that any warranty job requires a diagnostics run so that Munchen knows the car is actually in the workshop. I guess they are worried someone will rip them off the 50c or whatever it costs to manufacture and supply the brakelight.

Just telling you what I was told........

Put a bit of tape over where the lens is cracked - it at least holds it in place which is better than it falling out. I did it cos I could not be bothered to go to the dealer just for that little issue so I waited until my first service.

Yeah I don't think I'll need to tape it on as mine is cracked on the far right hand side in two places. One bit is hanging off and I'm hoping for it to fall off because I think that will make the light defective as then some LEDs will be lost. I did have to open the boot twice today but nothing happened. It's still hanging in there...

See if you can get some tape with 4 overlapping rings prominently printed on it - might speed things up a bit :-)
